Where Is Joy?

Lisa Sargent lives in Carmichael with her partner-in-life, Jim, and their kitty, Bobbie. Creativity bubbled up after my retirement from the State of California. She loves writing what just shows up and sharing with other generous souls.

Do I miss joy because I expect too much?
To be bowled over by happiness, overwhelmed by
pleasure, big accomplishments,
endless mounds of gratitude?

Is joy right here, flirting with a flip of a skirt
a wink of an eye, taunting me to notice
small goodness, enjoyment, contentment
skipping happily down the neural pathway
in my mind

Joy gets run over by the dump truck of
irritation, frustration, impatience,
noisily rattling down the pathway,
taking up all the lanes of traffic

Let’s repave that pathway,
make room for Simple joys –
folding warm sweet smelling laundry,
Take a moment to sniff with pleasure,
slipping into a cozy, comfortable bed at night,
dead tired, wiggling, Settle in with a smile
a smile for you and for the night
greeting you in its warm embrace

A steaming cup of nutty, rich joe, laced with milk
a familiar treat to start the day,
the cup warming chilled fingers
tich, nutty flavor filling the mouth
trickling down the throat

Notice, notice, says Simple Joy
I am here all the time
open your senses and drink me in.
I am waiting for you.  I am here.

LOVE this and THANK YOU for sharing! I’m trying more and more to notice the small, simple joys of life and to live more intentionally every day. Even this very moment I’m sitting alone with a cup of hot coffee in the early morning hours before my family wakes up. And I’m thankful for the quiet, for the dark, for the soft sounds of the fireplace as it crackles and glows and the slow breathing of the dog sleeping on the couch. Life is good.
